So What’s In A Name?

“What’s in a name? that which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet”
Romeo and Juliet (II, ii, 1-2)

What is eSLUMS? Why such a strange name for a cognitive assessment (aka a “brain test”)? Is it some type of electronic place where poor people live? SLUMS?

“e” =  “electronic”

“SLUMS” = “Saint Louis University Mental Status” Exam

We wanted a name that gave credit to the folks who created this exam and recognize the large body of research around validating, understanding and interpreting the results. We also wanted to note that we are a little different also. We try to be as faithful as possible to the original exam, but we also realize that changes in format make it slightly different.

Our hope is to have captured the SLUMS exam as faithfully as possible AND added the benefits of electronic records which allow for easy storage, retrieval and analysis of results.
